The power to protect the Sonoran Desert for future generations is up to you.
Our charge is to empower awareness and actualize global preservation through science, research, learning and teaching. Through the work of our scientific team and the dedication of more than 650 tireless volunteer stewards we care for and study the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and surrounding Sonoran desert.
Our donors comprise a unique circle of individuals who take a long-range perspective of the Preserve and are committed to leaving a legacy and making a difference for future generations to come.
Science is in our Nature.
Truly the most exciting aspect of the Conservancy is our newly invigorated focus on education, especially among school age children where we bring on-site and in-classroom education essential to Title 1 schools and STEM education for all students. Thanks to generous gifts from the Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation and others, our science programs are reaching new students and new future scientists.
Our Junior Citizen Science Festival brings more than a thousand students from all demographics into the Preserve to learn how scientists study the environment and how you, as a citizen scientist, can take an active part in increasing knowledge of our natural world. This festival features more than 15 hands-on, interactive learning stations that immerse you in the wonders of our natural world.
We back up those programs with in-class science programs designed to keep students talking even after the lesson is over. The conversation on the car ride home with parents is so important and we develop strategies with our Education Director designed to get kids and parents into conversations that have a direct impact on the environment.
It is essential that we develop partnerships with higher education, other service organizations like the Girl Scouts, the Boys & Girls Clubs and the tribal communities to extend the reach of our science programs.
There is no time to lose.
Every day invasive species threaten indigenous flora and fauna. Our Parson’s Field Institute which is the research center of the Conservancy is urgently working to identify and remediate invasive plant species and using its research to build best practices for long- term resource management and to detect changes in plant and animal communities. It provides educational opportunities for every age and contributes to the broader global scientific knowledge of natural areas. The work we perform has global significance.
