Human History of the McDowells at Brown’s Ranch Trailhead

Did you know that most of what is now Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve was formerly the Brown family’s ranch, also known as DC Ranch? The area was also home to three Native American cultures over the last 7000 years. Walk with us on the Jane Rau Trail as we discuss an overview of the area’s history, ranching in the McDowells, and some details on the Brown family and their impact on the Scottsdale area. We’ll talk about how this became the most successful ranch in the region and provide some insights into ranch life in the early 20th century.

Pets are not permitted at our activities due to safety concerns. If you would like to request an accommodation for your service animal, please contact our office at least two weeks before the event you plan to attend.

The difficulty of hikes varies. Please choose hikes that match your fitness level. Restrooms are available at the trailheads. Bring Water and snacks for the trail. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the hike.
