As a McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Steward, you will help champion the preservation of open space, care for and maintain Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and help engage the community in preserving our public lands. You will be working with others who share your passion for nature and a desire to make our community a better place. Being a Steward is fun!
Dedicate your time and skills in activities ranging from trail building, trail patrols on foot, bike and/or horseback, guiding hikes, educating the public and helping conduct research about the ecosystems of these vital lands. Your efforts will help future generations enjoy this ecological treasure.
New steward Orientation Dates
Through the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Steward Program, we preserve and protect the environment and resources of the preserve for future generations. To join our team, sign up for one of our monthly new steward orientation sessions.
Classes will held the second Saturday of each month from September 2019 to March 2020. There is a $75 charge for this orientation. The minimum age for McDowell Sonoran Conservancy volunteers is 18 years old.
This intensive workshop provides important information about the history and background of the Preserve, the relationship between the Conservancy and City of Scottsdale and the important mission of the Conservancy. Participants are introduced to the trails, trailheads and other features of the Preserve; safety issues, communicating with the public, patrol strategies, how to report trail conditions, contact information and the wide range of stewardship opportunities.
Participants who complete the class portion of the orientation are assigned a mentor. The mentor helps guide a participant with field orientation sessions and introduction to the variety of stewardship opportunities.
