Arizona Air Disasters – WWII Military Aircraft crashes on the San Francisco Peaks (Flagstaff) & the McDowell Mountains (Scottsdale)
August 22 at 5:30 pm in the Mustang Library Auditorium
Blue skies, Air Force cadet training and inexperience are sometimes a formula for disaster. During WWII the Southwestern US, from California to New Mexico, was chosen as a major flight training site by the Air Force of the US and other Allies.
Flagstaff, with its 12,633’ San Francisco Peak, was the site of five bomber crashes (B-18A, R4D-1, B-17F, B-24J, B-17G) from October 1941 to September 1944. The McDowell Mountains have also witnessed a tragedy that left a scar still visible today. The human interest aspect of each story is revealed through maps, photos and media clippings showing the type of aircraft, date of disaster, flight path, the recovery efforts and media coverage.
Speakers: Dave Lorenz and Len Marcisz
